Room 19 made Fathers' Day cards for our dads. We created a cute illustration for the front and wrote character descriptions for the inside. When we're not working with the teacher in a small group, we have a range of options for independent activities. A lot of these activities are helping us develop our Key Competencies - these are important skills and dispositions that will help us be successful in life. The activities we do allow us to challenge our brains, be creative, use our imaginations, work cooperatively and collaboratively, share, negotiate, solve problems, follow our interests, inquire into new areas, develop our fine motor skills, have fun, be engaged....the list goes on! At the moment, a lot of students in Room 19 are interested in Top Trump cards. They have been creating their own based on book characters (for example the Goosebumps books). What a great follow up activity for Reading, that the children came up with themselves! Some of them have been so engaged in their work, they are choosing to carry on during break times! Some of our challenges / activities: What could you build using only 1 cup of Lego? What bridge could you construct to allow the animals to cross the quick sand? What close up observations can you make? Sketch plants, leaves or other nature objects in as much detail as you can. Recreate famous landmarks using blocks, Lego, or other construction equipment. Use loose parts to create interesting temporary designs or pictures. How can you use Stop Motion animation to show your learning? Create a catapult using skewers, marshmallows and rubber bands. Create a collaborative art work. We've been looking at describing characters. We know that we can describe the "outside" of a character - what you would see if you looked at them, and the "inside" of a character - their personality, thoughts and actions. We had 5 minutes to write a short description of a pet or animal. Can you spot any of our similes or metaphors? What about our amazing adjectives? Room 19 have been working hard learning about multiplication. We're getting lots of strategies (tools) in our maths tool belts! We can draw pictures to show multiplication number sentences. We can use arrays to show them too. We know that multiplication is commutative - that 8x5 is the same as 5x8. We can use repeated addition and doubles. And we're learning other strategies, like using place value and doubling & halving.
